Ebola Outbreak Rock DR Congo As Super Eagle Are On Standby Hope For World Cup 2026

The deadly Ebola virus outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo greatly increased Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for the World Cup next month.
Nigeria filed a protest after losing to the Congolese in the World Cup qualifying playoffs, raising concerns about the eligibility of some Congolese players.
FIFA rejected their protest, but they now have a window in case the DR Congo is denied permission to participate in the World Cup because of the virus.
Because of the high number of infections and fatalities, the WHO designated the nation’s Ebola outbreak as an international health emergency.
Due to the emergency, the local Football Federation has decided to relocate the team’s training camp from Kinshasa to Belgium, where they will get ready for games against Group K rivals Portugal, Colombia, and Uzbekistan.
FIFA is keeping a close eye on the situation despite the fact that all 26 players called up play overseas and have not recently returned home. This is in addition to the United States’ decision to impose temporary entry restrictions for players who have been in high-risk areas, which has complicated the games in Houston (against Portugal) and Atlanta (against Uzbekistan).
According to Sportmediaset, local experts have called for a 21-day quarantine for African players and an entry ban for their supporters after Mexican Health Minister Kershenobich issued an epidemiological alert prior to the Guadalajara match (against Colombia).
FIFA would then decide which national teams would be eligible to finish the roster if these restrictions somehow prevented the Democratic Republic of the Congo from competing, freeing up a spot in the main draw.
As a result, either Nigeria or Jamaica, who lost to the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the intercontinental playoff, may have a new window of opportunity, though this possibility currently appears to be very remote.
