Adeyanju Weighs In on Tinubu, Obi and Atiku’s 2027 Political Contest as Opposition Faces Fresh Uncertainty

Human rights lawyer and political commentator Deji Adeyanju has stirred fresh political debate following his comments on the possible implications of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s absence from the 2027 presidential race.
Adeyanju shared his position amid growing uncertainty surrounding the opposition’s political arrangements and the recent court judgment affecting the leadership structure of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the platform under which Atiku had emerged as a presidential candidate.
In his comments, Adeyanju described Atiku as a major political challenger to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, arguing that the former vice president’s participation could significantly influence the dynamics of the next presidential election.
He also discussed the political prospects of former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, who is expected to remain a prominent figure in the opposition landscape ahead of the 2027 contest.
Adeyanju’s remarks have added to the growing debate over the strength of individual presidential contenders, the importance of political alliances and the potential consequences of divisions among opposition figures.
The comments followed a Federal High Court judgment that nullified the processes through which the David Mark-led ADC leadership emerged and affected the party’s process of producing Atiku as its presidential candidate. The ruling has introduced fresh uncertainty into the party’s preparations, although the ADC has rejected the decision and indicated its intention to challenge it through the judicial process.
The legal development has attracted considerable attention because of Atiku’s position in the opposition and the possibility that further proceedings could affect the party’s preparations for the election.
Adeyanju’s intervention has also revived discussions about the relationship between Atiku and Obi, two opposition politicians with significant political followings. Their ability to cooperate, compete independently or attract support from different sections of the electorate remains an important subject in conversations about the coming election.
Meanwhile, President Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress are continuing their political activities ahead of the next general election. The President’s administration will also face public scrutiny over its policies, economic decisions and record in office as voters consider their choices.
Although Adeyanju has expressed strong personal views about the political calculations surrounding the election, his comments do not establish how Nigerians will vote or determine the eventual outcome. The result will depend on several factors, including the final list of candidates, party structures, campaign strategies, voter participation and the issues that matter most to the electorate.
With the 2027 election approaching, political statements from prominent commentators are likely to continue generating debate. The unfolding legal disputes within opposition parties and the relationship between major political figures will remain important developments to watch as the campaign season progresses.
