Obi laments boy children’s neglect and insecurity.May 17, 2026

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, has expressed concerns about the welfare of Nigerian boys, pointing to poverty, insecurity, and inadequate funding for healthcare and education as significant risks to their future.

On Sunday, in honor of the International Day of the Boy Child, Obi posted the comments on his X handle.

“There can be no keener revelation of a society’s soul than the way in which it treats its children,” he wrote, quoting the late Nelson Mandela, the former president of South Africa.

He claimed that the day provided a chance for “sober reflection” on Nigerian boys’ futures. Obi emphasized the importance of investing in programs that support the development and empowerment of young boys, highlighting the need for a collective effort from all sectors of society. He urged parents, educators, and policymakers to prioritize initiatives that nurture their potential and ensure a brighter future for the next generation.

He continued, “The boy child needs to be given a solid basic education, empowered with productive skills, and mentored with the right progressive values that help build a better society in order for him to become a responsible and productive member of society.” This foundation will not only benefit the individual but also contribute to the overall health and prosperity of the community. By investing in the future of our youth, we ensure a brighter and more equitable world for everyone.

“It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men,” Obi wrote, citing Frederick Douglass.

He cautioned against ignoring children’s development and called for increased investment in them.

For the sake of our country’s future as a whole, we must put an end to the abuse and neglect we inflict on our boy children and start securing their lives and investing in their future.

“The society we mistreat today will exact its revenge on us tomorrow, as I have always maintained,” he declared.

Obi also urged boys to maintain their optimism.

“And to all the boys out there: Never give up on your aspirations. We are working to create a country that not only protects your life and invests in your future, but also fosters your development and dreams so you can take advantage of international opportunities that align with your abilities and goals,” he wrote. He emphasized the importance of resilience and perseverance in the face of challenges. “Remember, the path to success is often paved with obstacles, but it is our determination that will ultimately lead us to triumph,” he concluded.

Every year on May 16, people celebrate International Day of the Boy Child.

Without detracting from the emphasis on girls’ rights, it seeks to raise boys who are emotionally intelligent, self-assured, and responsible. This day serves as a reminder of the importance of nurturing healthy emotional development in boys, encouraging them to embrace qualities such as empathy and respect. By fostering these values, society can help create a more equitable and harmonious future for all children. This initiative also highlights the need for positive role models in boys’ lives, guiding them toward constructive expressions of their identity. Engaging communities in discussions about masculinity can further promote understanding and support for all young people as they navigate their formative years.
