Five Arrested in Ekiti Over Alleged Assault and Public Humiliation of Woman

Five suspects have been arrested in Ekiti State over the alleged assault and public humiliation of a woman accused of being responsible for the death of a community resident.
The incident, which reportedly occurred in Agbado-Ekiti, has sparked renewed concerns about mob violence, false accusations and the dangers of taking the law into one’s hands.
The victim, identified as Funmilayo Omoyajowo, reportedly petitioned the police on September 22, 2026, alleging that she was attacked at her residence by several individuals who accused her of having a hand in the death of a man identified as Mr Abayo.
The alleged incident took place on June 20, 2026, at about 8 a.m. The woman claimed that the attackers invaded her home, assaulted her and inflicted injuries on her during the confrontation.
According to the allegations, the attackers subsequently dragged her into an open space and stripped her naked in front of other people, subjecting her to public humiliation. The incident was reportedly recorded, and footage later circulated on social media, exposing the woman to further embarrassment and distress.
The development has raised serious questions about the treatment of individuals accused of wrongdoing and the need to protect people from violence, regardless of the suspicions held against them.
The five arrested suspects were identified as Tafa Adesanmi, 60; Fatoba Sola, 65; Hassan Yahaya, 43; Bodunde Adebayo, 32; and Titilayo Toyin, 47. They are reportedly residents of Agbado-Ekiti.
The suspects are being investigated over allegations bordering on conspiracy, assault occasioning harm, cyberstalking and cyberbullying. Authorities are also reportedly making efforts to identify and apprehend other individuals alleged to have participated in the incident.
The case has drawn attention to the dangers of mob justice, particularly when accusations are made without evidence and individuals are subjected to punishment outside the legal system.
Accusations of witchcraft and other unproven claims have, in some communities, contributed to the persecution and abuse of vulnerable people. Such allegations can have devastating consequences when anger, rumours and suspicion replace proper investigation.
Regardless of the nature of an accusation, no individual has the right to assault or publicly degrade another person. Anyone who believes a crime has been committed should report the matter to the appropriate authorities and allow the legal process to determine the facts.
The alleged circulation of the woman’s images and videos online has also raised concerns about digital abuse and the responsibilities of social media users. Footage showing a person being assaulted or humiliated can continue to cause harm long after the original incident, especially when it is repeatedly shared without the victim’s consent.
Social media users are therefore encouraged to avoid forwarding such material and instead report harmful content through the appropriate channels. Respecting a victim’s privacy is important to preventing further humiliation and protecting their dignity.
The incident has also highlighted the importance of ensuring that victims of violence receive appropriate assistance and that their complaints are investigated fairly. People who report abuse should be treated with respect, while authorities work to establish the facts and determine the responsibility of those involved.
For the arrested suspects, the allegations must be examined through the proper legal process. Their arrest does not automatically establish guilt, and the investigation will need to determine the circumstances of the incident and the individual roles of those accused.
The search for other alleged participants is also important to establishing the full picture of what happened. Investigators will need to gather relevant evidence, interview witnesses and determine whether additional individuals were involved in the alleged assault or the distribution of the footage.
The incident serves as a reminder that community disagreements and suspicions must never be allowed to escalate into violence. Justice cannot be achieved through intimidation, public humiliation or physical attacks.
Residents of Ekiti State and Nigerians more broadly will be hoping that the investigation establishes the facts and that any proven wrongdoing is addressed in accordance with the law.
The case has once again brought the issues of mob violence, human dignity and responsible social media use into focus, underscoring the need for communities to reject unlawful punishment and respect the rights of every individual.
