2027 Election: South-East APC Governors Endorse Tinubu, Call for Greater Igbo Participation in Presidential Poll

Governors and leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the South-East have reaffirmed their support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027, urging political stakeholders across the region to work together and strengthen their participation in the forthcoming presidential election.
The endorsement was announced during a meeting of South-East APC stakeholders held in Enugu, where party leaders discussed the region’s political future, its relationship with the Federal Government and the need to improve its representation at the national level.
The meeting was led by Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, alongside Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah and Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru.
The governors and other party stakeholders reportedly adopted Tinubu as their preferred presidential candidate for the 2027 general election, declaring their intention to mobilise support for the president across the region.
The endorsement was presented as part of efforts to strengthen the APC’s political presence in the South-East and encourage greater participation in national political affairs.
Uzodimma, who chairs the South-East Governors’ Forum, said the region needed to reconsider its political strategy and develop stronger relationships with the federal government.
He argued that political participation and cooperation among regional leaders were important factors in determining the level of influence a region could exercise in national decision-making.
The Imo governor maintained that the South-East could improve its political standing by working collectively rather than allowing disagreements among political stakeholders to weaken its influence.
According to him, the region needed to take advantage of opportunities available through political engagement and cooperation with the federal government.
The governors also called on political leaders, party members and other stakeholders to support efforts aimed at strengthening the APC’s structures across the region ahead of the 2027 election.
Their position reflects the growing political discussions surrounding the South-East’s participation in the next presidential contest.
The region has historically maintained a strong political identity, with different parties and candidates attracting support across its five states.
However, political leaders have continued to debate how the region can improve its representation and influence within the country’s national political structure.
During the meeting, Uzodimma reportedly argued that the South-East could not achieve its political objectives by remaining isolated from broader national political arrangements.
He said the region needed to establish stronger partnerships and ensure that its political decisions reflected its long-term interests.
The governor also pointed to changes in the APC’s political presence across the South-East, saying the party had expanded its representation in the region since the 2023 general election.
According to him, the APC’s growing number of elected representatives provided an opportunity to strengthen its political organisation and increase its participation in future elections.
Uzodimma said the region’s political leaders needed to ensure that the progress recorded by the party was reflected in electoral participation.
He also stressed the importance of reconciliation among party members, particularly as political activities intensify ahead of the next general election.
Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah also reportedly supported the endorsement, describing the decision as a political arrangement based on cooperation and the interests of the region.
Mbah said the South-East needed to establish stronger relationships with the federal government to improve its access to development opportunities.
He cited infrastructure projects, energy investments and other government interventions as areas that could influence the region’s economic development.
The Enugu governor reportedly referenced the revival of the eastern railway corridor, developments in the energy sector and the concession of the Enugu airport as examples of projects associated with the federal government’s engagement with the region.
He argued that cooperation between the federal and state governments could help improve infrastructure and create opportunities for businesses and residents.
Mbah also maintained that political alignment should be accompanied by practical development outcomes that benefit communities.
The governor’s comments reflected the position of the South-East APC leaders that political cooperation could contribute to the region’s development objectives.
Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru also expressed support for Tinubu’s re-election, urging party members to strengthen their structures and prepare for the 2027 election.
Nwifuru reportedly expressed confidence that the APC could expand its presence across the South-East if party leaders worked together and addressed internal disagreements.
He also called for reconciliation among members and encouraged stakeholders to manage political differences through dialogue.
The governor said the party needed to create an environment where new members could participate effectively without undermining existing structures.
The meeting also featured discussions about the relationship between political representation and the region’s ability to influence decisions at the national level.
Party leaders reportedly argued that the South-East needed to increase its participation in national political activities to improve its bargaining position.
They maintained that political cooperation among the region’s leaders could help create opportunities for greater representation in government.
The endorsement was therefore presented as part of a broader strategy to strengthen the APC’s political organisation and mobilise support ahead of the next presidential election.
A motion adopting Tinubu as the party’s preferred presidential candidate was reportedly moved by former Senate President Pius Anyim and seconded by former Senate President Ken Nnamani.
The meeting also involved lawmakers, former governors, party elders and other political stakeholders from the South-East.
Participants reportedly agreed to work towards strengthening the party’s structures and increasing its participation in the region’s political activities.
The communiqué issued after the meeting reportedly declared Tinubu the APC’s preferred presidential candidate for the 2027 election.
The leaders also pledged to mobilise political, organisational and other resources in support of the party’s electoral preparations.
The endorsement comes as political parties and aspirants continue to position themselves ahead of the 2027 general election.
Tinubu, who won the 2023 presidential election, is expected to face renewed political competition as parties prepare to present their candidates and campaign programmes.
The South-East remains an important part of the national electoral landscape because of its population, political history and the influence of its voters.
In the 2023 presidential election, the region recorded different voting patterns across its five states, with candidates receiving varying levels of support.
The APC’s endorsement of Tinubu therefore represents an attempt by its regional leadership to strengthen the party’s presence and encourage greater mobilisation before the next election.
The development has also renewed discussions about the relationship between political representation, regional interests and electoral participation.
For the APC, the challenge will be to translate the endorsement by party leaders into wider support among voters across the South-East.
The governors’ position does not automatically determine how residents of the region will vote, as individual voters retain the right to make their own political decisions.
However, the endorsement demonstrates the direction adopted by the party’s leadership as it prepares for the 2027 presidential contest.
The meeting also highlighted the importance of addressing internal party disagreements and ensuring that political stakeholders remain involved in campaign preparations.
As the election approaches, political parties are expected to intensify their engagement with communities, present their policy proposals and seek support from voters.
The South-East APC leaders have maintained that cooperation among regional stakeholders will be important to their political plans.
Their endorsement of Tinubu has therefore become part of the broader political conversation surrounding the 2027 presidential election and the future direction of the APC in the region.
