Rivers Police Remove DPO After Suspected Cultists Renovate Abuloma Police Outpost

The Rivers State Police Command has relieved two senior police officers of their duties following allegations that suspected cultists renovated a police outpost in Port Harcourt and later visited the facility to celebrate the completion of the project.

The affected officers are the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Abuloma Division and the officer overseeing the Abuloma Police Outpost. Both officers have reportedly been queried and removed from their positions pending the outcome of an investigation.

The development followed the circulation of videos on social media showing individuals suspected to be members of a cult group at the renovated facility on Thursday, October 15, 2026. Some police officers were also reportedly seen posing for photographs with the visitors during the gathering.

In a statement issued on Friday, October 16, the Rivers State Police Command confirmed that it had taken notice of the reports and the circulating footage. The command said Commissioner of Police Olugbenga Adepoju had ordered a full investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the renovation and determine whether the allegations were accurate.

The police expressed concern that a public security facility could become associated with individuals suspected of belonging to unlawful organisations. The command stressed that police stations and outposts are established to protect citizens, enforce the law and maintain public order.

According to the command, such facilities must not become platforms through which suspected criminal groups seek recognition, influence or public acceptance.

The investigation is expected to establish the identities of the individuals or groups that financed or facilitated the renovation, as well as determine which police officers authorised or approved the project.

Investigators will also examine whether the necessary procedures were followed, whether appropriate background checks were conducted and whether any personnel breached professional standards or compromised the integrity of the Nigeria Police Force.

The Commissioner of Police has reportedly directed that anyone found culpable should face appropriate disciplinary or legal consequences in accordance with the findings of the investigation and applicable laws.

However, the command clarified that it does not oppose legitimate assistance from members of the public who wish to support improvements to police facilities. It noted that the Nigeria Police Act 2020 provides for gifts and contributions to the Police General Fund.

The command emphasised that such assistance must comply with established procedures and must not compromise police independence, security or professionalism. It also warned that donations or other forms of support cannot protect anyone from investigation or prosecution.

The incident has generated public concern about the relationship between law enforcement agencies and suspected cult groups. For many observers, the central issue is not simply who paid for the renovation, but whether the project was properly authorised and whether the conduct surrounding it was consistent with the standards expected of police personnel.

The presence of police officers alongside individuals suspected of cult involvement has also raised questions that investigators will need to address. However, the allegations against the individuals involved have not, by themselves, established that any particular person committed an offence.

The police investigation is expected to clarify the circumstances behind the renovation, the source of the funding and the level of involvement of the officers responsible for the facility.

The Rivers State Police Command reiterated its commitment to professionalism, accountability, the protection of lives and property, and the fight against cultism and organised crime.

It also appealed to residents to remain calm and provide credible information that could assist security agencies in maintaining peace across the state.

As the investigation continues, the two officers will remain relieved of their duties pending further action. The outcome of the probe is expected to determine whether disciplinary measures or legal proceedings will follow.
