The Federal Government and state governments across Nigeria have stepped up security measures around schools as pupils and students prepare to resume for the 2026/2027 academic session.
The move is aimed at protecting students, teachers and other members of the school community amid continued concerns over insecurity and previous attacks on educational institutions in different parts of the country.
The Federal Ministry of Education has confirmed that Federal Unity Colleges nationwide will resume academic activities on Monday, September 14, with relevant security agencies placed on heightened alert around the schools and their surrounding communities.
The government said the security arrangements are intended to ensure a safe and orderly return to classrooms, while school authorities have been directed to maintain close communication with security agencies throughout the resumption period.
Parents and guardians have also been urged to remain calm and rely on verified information concerning school activities rather than unconfirmed reports circulating on social media.
The renewed security focus comes against the background of Nigeria’s long-running safe-schools challenge, particularly in communities affected by kidnapping, banditry and other forms of criminal activity.
Over the years, schools in parts of the North and other vulnerable areas have been targeted by criminal groups, with students and teachers sometimes abducted during attacks.
The incidents have raised concerns among parents and education stakeholders about the safety of children travelling to and returning from school, as well as the security of boarding facilities.
State governments are therefore adopting measures based on the security conditions in their respective areas. These include increased surveillance, closer coordination with security agencies, greater monitoring of school surroundings and calls for residents to report suspicious activities.
In some locations, authorities are also encouraging school administrators, parents and community leaders to work together to identify potential threats before they escalate.
The Federal Government has emphasised that school safety cannot be left entirely to security personnel, describing it as a shared responsibility involving government agencies, school authorities, parents, students and surrounding communities.
Education officials have urged schools to maintain emergency contacts with security agencies and promptly report threats or suspicious movements around their premises.
The renewed measures are particularly important for schools located close to forests, isolated roads and communities that have previously experienced attacks.
Security around school routes is also a major concern, as students may be vulnerable while travelling between their homes and educational institutions.
Beyond physical security, authorities are expected to continue addressing other conditions that affect safe learning, including damaged facilities, inadequate fencing and insufficient security personnel.
