Breaking: Oyo Governor Seyi Makinde Hands Over Power to Deputy Governor as Reason Emerges

Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, has officially handed over the affairs of the state government to his deputy, Barrister Bayo Lawal, ahead of his temporary absence from the state.

The development was confirmed in an official communication transmitted to the Oyo State House of Assembly, in line with constitutional provisions requiring a governor to formally notify the legislature whenever he will be away from office for an official assignment or vacation.

According to the notification, Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal will serve as Acting Governor throughout the period of Governor Makinde’s absence, overseeing the day-to-day administration of the state and ensuring continuity in governance until the governor returns.

Government sources disclosed that Makinde’s decision to temporarily transfer executive authority is connected to an official engagement outside the state.

Although details of the governor’s itinerary were not immediately made public, officials explained that the move was purely administrative and intended to ensure that government activities continue without interruption.

The temporary transfer of power is in accordance with Section 190 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which empowers a deputy governor to act on behalf of the governor whenever the governor is unavailable to perform official duties.

Barrister Bayo Lawal, a seasoned administrator and legal practitioner, has served as deputy governor since the beginning of the current administration and has frequently represented Governor Makinde at official functions within and outside Oyo State.

Observers believe his experience in government places him in a strong position to oversee the affairs of the state during the governor’s temporary absence.

Political analysts also noted that temporary transfers of executive authority have become standard practice among Nigerian governors whenever they embark on official trips or annual leave.
