Kogi Killing: Calls for Justice After Young Man Allegedly Murdered Over Cable Theft

Anger and grief have reportedly gripped Ankpa, Kogi State, following the alleged killing of a young man identified as AbdulHahim over accusations of electric cable theft.
The incident, said to have occurred on Thursday, October 15, in a community within Ankpa Local Government Area, has reignited concerns about jungle justice and the dangers of allowing suspected offenders to be punished outside the established legal system.
The young man’s death has drawn particular attention after a video reportedly circulated online showing him pleading with his alleged attackers to spare his life. In the disturbing footage, he was said to have appealed to them by explaining that he was his mother’s only son.
His desperate plea has reportedly stirred emotions among residents and social media users, many of whom have expressed sadness over the circumstances surrounding his death and called for those responsible to be identified and brought before the law.
According to reports, the confrontation was linked to allegations of electric cable theft. However, the precise circumstances that led to the young man’s death, including the identities of those who allegedly attacked him and the sequence of events before the incident, remain unclear.
The reported killing has generated mixed reactions in the community. While some residents have expressed frustration over the theft of public and private property, others have strongly condemned the alleged decision to take the law into one’s hands.
Those calling for justice have maintained that even when a person is suspected of committing a crime, the appropriate response is to arrest the individual and hand them over to security agencies for investigation.
The incident has also placed the activities of local vigilante groups under renewed scrutiny, particularly as reports have linked the alleged attackers to community security operations.
The Atakpo vigilante group, which reportedly operates in Ankpa and neighbouring communities, has denied involvement in the incident. A source associated with the group was quoted as saying that it had no hand in the reported killing.
The denial has added to calls for a comprehensive investigation to determine who was involved and whether any members of a vigilante organisation participated in the incident.
A resident of Agwa-Ankpa, identified as Usman Adejoh, reportedly condemned the killing and urged authorities to intervene. He called for a thorough investigation and warned that failure to establish the facts could increase tension and weaken public confidence in the justice system.
Adejoh also stressed that suspected offenders should be apprehended and handed over to the police, rather than subjected to violence by individuals or groups acting outside the law.
The case has once again brought the issue of jungle justice into public discussion, particularly in communities where residents sometimes rely on local security groups to help tackle theft and other criminal activities.
Although such groups may assist in maintaining security, their activities are expected to remain within the law. Arresting a suspect is different from determining guilt, and punishment must follow the appropriate legal process.
The killing has also raised questions about how communities can respond to crimes involving infrastructure, including the theft of electrical cables that may disrupt services and expose residents to additional risks.
Electric cables are essential components of power and public infrastructure. Their theft can cause financial losses, service disruptions and safety hazards. However, the need to protect such infrastructure does not justify violence against people suspected of stealing it.
For many residents, the most pressing concern is that the circumstances surrounding AbdulHahim’s death should be established without delay. They want authorities to identify the individuals involved, determine what happened and ensure that anyone found responsible faces the appropriate legal consequences.
The incident is also a reminder of the importance of protecting the rights of suspects, regardless of the accusations against them. Under the law, an allegation of theft does not automatically establish guilt, and every suspect is entitled to due process.
As of the latest reports, an official police statement on the incident had not been issued. The circumstances of the alleged killing and the responsibility of those involved therefore remain matters for investigation.
Residents and concerned observers have continued to call for a transparent inquiry, urging security agencies to prevent further violence and ensure that justice is pursued through lawful means.
The reported death of the young man has left a painful question at the centre of the conversation: how can communities protect themselves from crime while ensuring that suspected offenders are not subjected to unlawful punishment?
