The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Kaduna State has clarified that it has not yet produced a recognised governorship candidate for the 2027 election, as the party continues to grapple with competing claims over its ticket.
The development has further complicated the party’s preparations for the election, with two prominent names, Mohammed Sani Abbas and former Senator Danjuma La’ah, linked to separate claims surrounding the governorship nomination.
The Kaduna State chapter has maintained that the process required to produce a valid candidate has not been concluded. The party’s position is that neither aspirant can be presented as the final flag bearer until the appropriate nomination procedure is completed.
The dispute centres largely on whether a valid governorship primary was conducted and whether subsequent attempts to resolve the disagreement among aspirants can legally serve as a replacement for a formal primary.
The disagreement began after the party failed to reach an agreement among several aspirants seeking its governorship ticket.
Mohammed Sani Abbas has maintained that he emerged from a primary process conducted by the party and that his name was subsequently recognised and submitted as the party’s candidate.
However, the Kaduna State chapter has rejected that position, insisting that the scheduled governorship primary did not produce a candidate through a valid process.
The controversy became more complicated after Danjuma La’ah, a former senator who represented Kaduna South, was adopted by members of the state party structure during an expanded meeting.
The adoption was backed by members of the State Executive Committee, zonal officials and local government party chairmen. However, the state chairman acknowledged that the party had not conducted a formal governorship primary at the time La’ah was adopted.
The situation has consequently created uncertainty over the legal status of the competing claims.
The state leadership has argued that a candidate cannot simply be recognised or substituted without complying with the relevant provisions of the Electoral Act and the party’s constitution.
The chairman has also maintained that the party must follow the proper procedure to resolve the matter rather than allow individual aspirants or factions to announce themselves as candidates.
The disagreement is particularly significant because the 2027 election is drawing closer and political parties are already strengthening their structures and preparing for campaigns.
A prolonged dispute over the governorship ticket could affect the NDC’s ability to mobilise supporters and establish a united campaign structure across Kaduna’s 23 local government areas.
The party’s internal disagreement has also attracted attention because Kaduna is one of the politically important states in the North-West.
The state has a large electorate and a complex political landscape, making it an important target for parties seeking to expand their influence ahead of the 2027 election.
The NDC will therefore need to resolve the dispute and present a candidate whose emergence is acceptable to its members and compliant with electoral requirements.
The situation also illustrates the difficulties political parties can face when several aspirants compete for the same ticket.
Four politicians were initially associated with the governorship contest within the Kaduna NDC: Yusuf Zari Madaki, Mohammed Sani Abbas, Ibrahim Husseini Abdukarim and Danjuma La’ah.
Efforts were reportedly made to achieve consensus among the aspirants, but those discussions did not produce an agreement.
La’ah later entered the contest after obtaining nomination documents from the party’s national secretariat.
His eventual adoption by the state structure further changed the political dynamics within the party.
The competing camps have since presented different accounts of how the party’s nomination process unfolded.
Abbas has insisted that he participated in the necessary process and emerged victorious, while those challenging his claim have questioned where and when the alleged primary took place.
The disagreement has also generated demands for the party to make its records available and clarify the process through which any candidate was selected.
The issue is not merely political because the validity of a party’s nomination process can have consequences for its ability to field a candidate in the general election.
A candidate whose emergence does not comply with electoral requirements could face legal challenges, potentially creating uncertainty for the party even after the election campaign has begun.
The Kaduna NDC leadership has therefore continued to emphasise the importance of completing the process properly.
The party may now have to conduct a fresh primary or adopt another legally recognised method of selecting its governorship candidate, depending on the outcome of consultations and the applicable electoral timetable.
The controversy has also prompted calls for the different factions to put their disagreements aside and work towards a common position.
The aspirants and their supporters remain members of the same political organisation, meaning that a negotiated settlement could help prevent the dispute from damaging the party’s chances in 2027.
For the electorate, the most important question will eventually be which candidate the NDC formally presents and what that candidate offers to Kaduna voters.
Issues such as security, education, employment, infrastructure, healthcare, agriculture and economic development are expected to dominate the governorship campaign.
The eventual NDC candidate will have to convince voters that the party can provide a credible alternative and offer practical solutions to the state’s challenges.
Until the nomination process is completed, however, the party’s governorship ticket remains unsettled.
The latest position from the Kaduna NDC leadership makes clear that the competing declarations should not be treated as a final resolution of the matter.
The party is now under pressure to settle its internal differences, follow the required electoral procedure and produce a candidate capable of leading a united campaign into the 2027 Kaduna governorship election.
