Senator Shehu Buba Umar Submits Himself to Security Agencies Over Banditry Allegations

Senator Shehu Buba Umar, who represents Bauchi South Senatorial District and is the Peoples Redemption Party’s governorship candidate in Bauchi State, has voluntarily made himself available to Nigeria’s security agencies for investigation following allegations linking him to banditry, terrorism financing, kidnapping and other criminal activities.

Umar said he took the unusual step because he wanted the allegations against him subjected to formal investigation rather than allowing them to remain allegations circulating on social media and other public platforms.

The senator announced his decision during a press conference in Bauchi, where he strongly denied any involvement in criminal activities.

He said he had never sponsored, financed, armed, facilitated or supported bandits, terrorists, kidnappers or any criminal organisation.

According to him, the allegations have become serious enough to require the intervention of the relevant security institutions so that the claims can be tested against evidence.

Umar said his lawyers, led by former Nigerian Bar Association President and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau, had formally written to the Department of State Services, Defence Intelligence Agency and Nigeria Police Force requesting comprehensive investigations.

He said the purpose of the request was to allow the security agencies to independently examine the allegations and determine whether there was any credible evidence connecting him to the crimes being alleged.

The senator challenged anyone who claims to have evidence against him to submit it directly to investigators.

He urged those making the allegations not to rely on social media posts, edited videos, anonymous claims, insinuations or political propaganda.

Umar said individuals who genuinely possess evidence should make it available to the authorities so that investigators can establish the facts.

He also called on the security agencies to invite those responsible for making the allegations and demand evidence capable of standing up to proper investigation.

The senator maintained that he was prepared to cooperate fully with the DSS, police, DIA, military and other competent institutions.

He further said he had nothing to fear from a legitimate investigation and would accept the consequences if investigators established a credible case against him.

Umar’s decision comes amid heightened political activity ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Bauchi State, where he is seeking to replace the current administration under the platform of the PRP.

He suggested that the allegations were politically motivated and intended to damage his reputation as he prepares for the election.

The senator also said similar accusations had been made against him in the past.

He recalled that allegations linking him to criminal activities had surfaced as far back as 2014, claiming that the earlier accusations were investigated and eventually dismissed.

He said related allegations had resurfaced at different times in various forms, prompting him to seek a formal mechanism through which the claims could be investigated once and for all.

Umar’s decision to approach the security agencies himself is likely to intensify public attention on the allegations, particularly because they involve some of the country’s most serious security-related crimes.

Banditry, kidnapping and terrorism financing remain major national security concerns, with security agencies continuing operations against criminal networks across several parts of northern Nigeria.

The senator, however, argued that accusations involving such serious offences should not be established through public speculation.

He said only a proper investigation based on credible evidence should determine whether there is any connection between him and the alleged criminal activities.

He also connected some of the allegations to his previous responsibilities in the Senate.

Umar previously chaired the Senate Committee on National Security and Intelligence, a position that required regular interaction with military, intelligence and other security institutions.

He said his interactions with security agencies were part of his responsibilities as a lawmaker involved in national security oversight.

He urged them not to attack, threaten or insult individuals who have accused him, insisting that the matter should be left to the appropriate authorities.
