One Person Killed After Woman Stabs Two Strangers in Times Square

A violent stabbing incident in Times Square, New York City, has left one person dead and another injured after a woman reportedly attacked two strangers with knives before being fatally shot by police.
The incident occurred on Monday, August 31, 2026, in the afternoon at one of Manhattan’s busiest public locations.
The woman, reported to be 49 years old, was allegedly carrying two large kitchen knives concealed inside a shopping bag when she suddenly attacked people in the area.
The first victim was a 68-year-old man who had reportedly just come out of a subway station and was waiting to cross the street with his wife.
The woman allegedly approached him and stabbed him in the abdomen.
Shortly afterward, she reportedly attacked a second person, a 32-year-old woman, who was also stabbed in the abdomen.
The two victims were quickly taken to hospital as emergency personnel responded to the scene.
Despite efforts to save her life, the younger woman later died from her injuries.
The 68-year-old man survived the attack and was reported to be in stable condition while receiving medical treatment.
The incident caused panic among pedestrians and tourists in Times Square, an area that is usually crowded with visitors, workers, performers and commuters throughout the day.
People in the area reportedly ran from the scene as police officers moved quickly to confront the suspect.
The presence of an NYPD substation close to the location enabled officers to respond within a short period.
When officers confronted the woman, she was reportedly still holding the knives.
Police repeatedly ordered her to drop the weapons and surrender.
The woman allegedly refused to comply and continued holding the knives as officers attempted to de-escalate the situation.
A Taser was reportedly deployed in an effort to stop her without using deadly force.
The Taser, however, failed to bring the situation under control.
The woman allegedly continued moving toward the officers while holding the knives.
Two officers then fired their weapons, striking her.
She fell to the ground as officers immediately moved toward her.
Emergency medical treatment was administered at the scene, but the woman later died from her injuries.
Videos recorded by people nearby quickly circulated online, showing a large police presence around the scene.
Parts of the area were temporarily cordoned off as investigators began examining the location.
Police also restricted movement around portions of Seventh Avenue while evidence was collected and the circumstances of the attack were investigated.
The motive for the stabbing remains a major focus of the investigation.
The victims were reportedly strangers to the woman, and there was no known personal connection between them.
Investigators are therefore treating the incident as an apparently random attack.
The suspect was also known to police because of previous interactions involving mental health concerns.
Records reportedly showed that officers had encountered her during incidents in 2018 and 2019.
However, she did not have a significant known arrest history before the latest incident.
Authorities have not indicated that terrorism was involved in the attack.
The woman’s mental health history is expected to be examined as investigators try to determine what may have prompted the sudden violence.
The incident has also renewed concerns about how police respond when individuals experiencing a possible mental health crisis are armed with dangerous weapons.
Officers reportedly spent several minutes attempting to persuade the woman to surrender before resorting to a Taser and ultimately using firearms.
The circumstances surrounding the police shooting will also be reviewed as part of the investigation into the incident.
Investigators are expected to examine surveillance footage, witness accounts, cellphone recordings and other available evidence to establish exactly how the confrontation unfolded.
The use of deadly force by the officers will be scrutinised to determine whether it complied with established procedures.
For the victims’ families, the incident has resulted in an unexpected tragedy.
The 32-year-old woman lost her life while in one of New York City’s most prominent public spaces, while the older victim suffered serious injuries.
Witnesses who watched the attack and subsequent police response were also left shaken by the sudden outbreak of violence.
Times Square attracts huge numbers of people every day, making the incident particularly alarming for residents and visitors.
The location is heavily patrolled and monitored, yet the attack demonstrated how quickly a dangerous situation can develop even in an area with a strong police presence.
The incident is also expected to fuel discussions about public safety, mental health services and the challenges of preventing random attacks in crowded urban areas.
Authorities will continue investigating the suspect’s background and the events leading up to the stabbing.
They will also work to establish whether there were any warning signs before the attack and whether additional intervention could have prevented the violence.
For now, the investigation remains ongoing.
One victim has died, another is recovering in hospital, and the woman accused of carrying out the attacks is also dead following the police shooting.
The incident has left Times Square shaken and once again highlighted the difficult security challenges faced in crowded public spaces.
