Seven Dead, 40 Injured in Deadly Shooting at Church Funeral in Jordan

At least seven people have been killed and 40 others injured after gunmen opened fire during a funeral at a Greek Orthodox church in Karak Governorate, southern Jordan, in an attack that has triggered widespread condemnation and heightened security concerns across the country.

The shooting occurred on Friday, October 23, 2026, at Hamoud Church, where mourners had gathered to attend a funeral service. The attack reportedly unfolded shortly after the ceremony began, turning a gathering intended to honour the deceased into a scene of panic and bloodshed.

According to reports, armed men approached the church and began firing at people attending the funeral. Witnesses described hearing several rounds of gunfire as worshippers and mourners attempted to escape the attack.

The assailants reportedly fired from outside the church before moving towards its entrance. Security camera footage was said to have captured multiple gunmen carrying out the shooting before fleeing the scene.

The violence left seven people dead, while dozens of others sustained injuries. Some of the injured were reportedly in critical condition and required urgent medical attention. The victims were taken to hospitals as emergency responders and security personnel moved to the scene.

The identity of the gunmen and their precise motive remained unclear following the attack. Authorities had not announced any arrests, while no group had publicly claimed responsibility for the shooting.

Jordanian officials described the incident as a terrorist attack linked to extremist ideology. Prime Minister Jafar Hassan condemned the violence, warning that extremism and terrorism would not be allowed to undermine the country’s stability or create divisions among its citizens.

King Abdullah II also condemned the attack and vowed that those responsible would face severe punishment. The monarch visited Karak following the incident, as authorities continued efforts to identify the perpetrators and establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

The attack has raised particular concern because it occurred at a Christian place of worship during a funeral, an event that had brought families and members of the community together to mourn a loss.

Jordan is a Muslim-majority country where Christians make up a small minority of the population. Christian communities have historically lived alongside Muslim communities in the kingdom, making the attack a source of concern for religious coexistence and national unity.

Officials and religious leaders have stressed the importance of preventing the violence from creating hostility between communities. The attack has also renewed calls for the protection of places of worship and for security agencies to respond firmly to extremist threats.

Following the shooting, Jordan announced three days of national mourning in honour of those killed. Security measures were also tightened at sensitive locations, including shopping centres and foreign diplomatic facilities, as authorities worked to prevent further attacks.

The investigation is expected to focus on identifying the gunmen, determining how they carried out the attack and establishing whether they had connections to known extremist organisations. However, officials had not confirmed any such links at the time of reporting.

The United Nations and several governments condemned the killings, describing attacks against civilians and religious gatherings as unacceptable. The incident has also drawn international attention to the security challenges facing the region and the importance of protecting people regardless of their religious beliefs.

The shooting is particularly alarming for Jordan, where major attacks of this nature are relatively rare, although the country has experienced extremist violence in the past. The latest incident has prompted renewed attention to the threat posed by armed groups and individuals seeking to spread fear through attacks on civilians.

As investigations continue, authorities are expected to provide further information about the victims, the suspects and the circumstances surrounding the attack. The immediate priority remains supporting those injured, helping affected families and ensuring that the perpetrators are brought to justice.

The deadly shooting has left the community in mourning and raised fresh concerns about the safety of religious gatherings. With seven people confirmed dead and 40 others injured, the attack stands as a devastating reminder of the human cost of extremist violence and the need to protect civilians from such atrocities.
