The legal team representing the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has raised alarm over what it described as a series of death threats allegedly directed at one of Kanu’s lawyers, warning that those responsible could face legal consequences.
The development comes amid heightened public interest in Kanu’s legal battle, with his counsel insisting that no lawyer should be intimidated or threatened for carrying out their constitutional duty of providing legal representation to a client.
Speaking on behalf of the legal team, the lawyer disclosed that he had recently received several threatening messages and calls allegedly linked to his role in Kanu’s defence.
According to him, the threats were serious enough to warrant immediate attention from relevant security agencies, adding that legal practitioners must be allowed to perform their professional responsibilities without fear, intimidation or harassment.
He described the alleged threats as unacceptable in a democratic society governed by the rule of law.
The lawyer maintained that representing a client in court does not amount to endorsing that person’s views or actions, stressing that every Nigerian is constitutionally entitled to legal representation regardless of the allegations brought against them.
He further stated that attempts to intimidate lawyers handling sensitive cases pose a threat not only to individual legal practitioners but also to the administration of justice.
According to him, intimidation of counsel could discourage lawyers from accepting complex or controversial cases, thereby undermining the fundamental right of citizens to fair legal representation.
The legal team warned that it would not hesitate to pursue legal remedies against anyone found to be responsible for issuing threats.
They revealed that evidence relating to the alleged threatening calls and messages had been documented and would be submitted to the appropriate authorities as part of ongoing investigations.
The lawyers also called on the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS) and other relevant security agencies to investigate the matter thoroughly and ensure those responsible are identified and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
They emphasised that threats against legal practitioners should never be treated lightly because they have the potential to interfere with judicial proceedings and public confidence in the justice system.
The incident has attracted reactions from members of the legal community, with several lawyers expressing concern over the safety of practitioners involved in high-profile cases.
Some senior advocates noted that regardless of public opinion surrounding any particular case, lawyers must remain free to discharge their professional obligations without intimidation.
Human rights advocates have also weighed in, arguing that threats against legal representatives undermine the principles of justice and due process guaranteed under Nigeria’s Constitution.
They called on authorities to strengthen measures aimed at protecting judges, lawyers and witnesses participating in sensitive criminal and constitutional matters.

The IPOB leader is currently serving a life sentence following his conviction on terrorism-related charges by the Federal High Court in Abuja.
