Kogi University Expels Two Students Over Alleged Same-Sex Relationship, Suspends Four Others

The Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH), Osara, in Kogi State, has expelled two students over their alleged involvement in a same-sex relationship, while four other students have been suspended for one academic session over separate allegations of fighting.

The disciplinary measures were announced by the university management following the consideration of recommendations submitted by the institution’s Students’ Disciplinary Committee after investigations into the incidents.

According to the university, the decisions were reached after the committee reviewed the cases in line with the institution’s disciplinary procedures and existing regulations governing student conduct.

In an official statement issued by the management, the university explained that the expulsion of the two students was based on findings relating to an alleged violation of the institution’s code of conduct concerning same-sex relationships.

The university maintained that its regulations prohibit acts considered inconsistent with its established rules and values, adding that all students are expected to comply with the behavioural standards outlined in the institution’s handbook throughout their period of study.

In a separate disciplinary action, the university also suspended four students for one academic session over their alleged involvement in a physical altercation on campus.

Management stated that fighting remains a serious offence capable of disrupting peace and academic activities within the university community.

The institution said the affected students would remain suspended for the duration of the sanction and would only be considered for re-admission after fulfilling all conditions attached to the disciplinary action.

The university emphasised that the sanctions were not intended to victimise any individual but to preserve order, discipline and a conducive learning environment for students and staff.

Officials reiterated that maintaining discipline remains one of the institution’s core priorities and that appropriate action would continue to be taken against anyone found guilty of violating university regulations.

The management further advised students to familiarise themselves with the institution’s rules and conduct themselves responsibly both within and outside the campus.

It encouraged students to resolve disagreements peacefully and avoid actions capable of attracting disciplinary measures.

The announcement has generated mixed reactions among members of the public and across social media platforms.

While some individuals supported the university’s decision, arguing that higher institutions have the authority to enforce their internal regulations, others questioned aspects of the disciplinary measures, particularly regarding the expulsion linked to the alleged same-sex relationship.

Education stakeholders noted that universities generally possess the authority to establish disciplinary policies governing student conduct, provided such procedures comply with applicable laws and institutional regulations.

They added that students who are dissatisfied with disciplinary decisions may seek redress through available administrative or legal channels where applicable.
