Two Policemen, Vigilante Killed as Armed Terrorists Abduct Zamfara Local Government Chairman

Armed terrorists have reportedly killed two police officers and a local vigilante operative during a deadly attack in Zamfara State, before abducting the chairman of a local government area in a fresh wave of violence that has once again highlighted the worsening security situation in the North-West.
According to security and local sources, the heavily armed assailants ambushed the convoy of the local government chairman while he was travelling through a community within the state.
The attackers reportedly opened fire on the convoy, triggering a fierce exchange of gunfire with security personnel attached to the chairman.
During the confrontation, two police officers assigned to the chairman’s security detail were fatally shot.
A member of the local vigilante group who joined efforts to repel the attackers also lost his life during the incident.
Despite resistance from the security team, the gunmen overpowered the convoy and forcefully whisked the local government chairman away to an unknown destination before fleeing the scene.
Witnesses said the attackers escaped into nearby forested areas that have long served as hideouts for criminal groups operating across parts of Zamfara and neighbouring states.
Security agencies were immediately alerted following the attack, prompting the deployment of reinforcement teams to the area.
A joint search-and-rescue operation involving the Nigeria Police Force, the military and other security agencies has reportedly commenced in an effort to locate and rescue the abducted chairman.
Authorities have also intensified surveillance and intelligence gathering across suspected routes believed to have been used by the attackers.
The identities of the deceased officers have not yet been officially released, pending notification of their families.
The deaths of the policemen and the vigilante operative have drawn sympathy from residents, who praised their courage in attempting to defend the chairman during the attack.
Community leaders described the incident as another painful reminder of the persistent insecurity affecting several parts of Zamfara State.
Residents called for stronger security measures, increased military presence and improved intelligence operations to curb the activities of armed groups responsible for repeated attacks on communities and government officials.
Security experts noted that attacks targeting public office holders demonstrate the growing boldness of criminal groups operating within the region.
They urged authorities to sustain coordinated operations aimed at dismantling terrorist camps and restoring confidence among local communities.
Zamfara State has remained one of Nigeria’s most affected regions by terrorism, banditry and kidnapping in recent years.
Several communities have experienced repeated attacks resulting in loss of lives, destruction of property and large-scale displacement of residents.
Federal and state governments have continued implementing various security measures, including joint military operations and collaboration with local vigilante groups, to contain the activities of armed criminals.
However, attacks have persisted in some rural areas despite ongoing security efforts.
The latest abduction has once again renewed calls for stronger protection of government officials, traditional rulers and civilians travelling through vulnerable routes.
Many residents also appealed to security agencies to intensify rescue operations and ensure the safe return of the abducted chairman.
As investigations continue, authorities have assured the public that every available resource is being deployed to track down the perpetrators and secure the victim’s release.
Meanwhile, security patrols have reportedly been reinforced across surrounding communities to prevent further attacks while the search operation remains ongoing.
The tragic deaths of the two police officers and the vigilante operative have also renewed discussions about the sacrifices made by frontline security personnel in protecting lives despite increasingly dangerous operational conditions.
The incident remains under active investigation, with security agencies expected to provide further updates as rescue efforts continue.
