Ondo Plane Crash: Aiyedatiwa Orders Full State Support for Rescue Efforts, Mourns Victims

Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has directed the immediate deployment of state emergency, health and security resources to support ongoing search and rescue operations following the crash of a Nigerian Air Force aircraft in Igbokoda, Ilaje Local Government Area of the state.
The aircraft, an ATR-42 with registration number NGR 931, crashed in a swampy area near the Naval Base in Igbokoda on Monday morning while travelling from Benin towards Lagos on what was described as a routine mission.
The incident triggered an emergency response involving the Nigerian Air Force, security agencies and other relevant authorities as efforts were launched to reach the crash site and determine the extent of the accident.
Initial reports said 32 people were on board the aircraft, comprising 25 passengers and seven crew members.
Aiyedatiwa expressed deep sadness over the crash and extended condolences to the Nigerian Air Force, the families of those on board and others affected by the tragedy.
The governor said Ondo State would provide all necessary support to the agencies working at the scene and directed state authorities to ensure that personnel and equipment needed for the emergency response were made available without delay.
As part of the response, the governor instructed the State Emergency Management Agency, the Ministry of Health and relevant security agencies to mobilise personnel and logistical resources to assist the Nigerian Air Force and other emergency agencies.
He also directed authorities to secure and cordon off the crash site so that rescue workers could operate without interference.
The decision was aimed at ensuring that emergency personnel could concentrate on the search and rescue operation while preventing unauthorised persons from entering the area.
The governor has also been in contact with senior Nigerian Air Force officials, the chairman of Ilaje Local Government Area and security agencies deployed around the crash site.
Residents of Igbokoda and surrounding communities were urged to remain calm and cooperate with emergency responders.
They were also cautioned against circulating unverified information as authorities continued to establish the full circumstances surrounding the accident.
The crash occurred in a riverine part of Ondo State, where difficult terrain and swampy conditions could complicate access to the site.
The location reportedly presented challenges for responders attempting to reach the aircraft and assess the condition of those on board.
The Nigerian Air Force confirmed that it had activated an immediate search and rescue operation following the incident.
The service said the aircraft was on a routine flight from Benin to Lagos when the accident occurred and that rescue operations were being coordinated with relevant authorities and emergency response agencies.
The cause of the crash had not been established at the time of the initial response.
President Bola Tinubu subsequently ordered a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident, saying the findings would be important in determining what caused the aircraft to go down and preventing similar incidents in the future.
The president also expressed grief over the incident and commiserated with the families of the passengers and members of the Nigerian Air Force involved.
The tragedy has generated concern across the country, particularly because the aircraft was carrying military personnel and other passengers on a routine mission.
The Nigerian Air Force plays a central role in national security operations, including intelligence gathering, surveillance, transportation and other activities supporting Nigeria’s defence and security architecture.
The ATR-42 aircraft involved in the incident is among aircraft used by the Nigerian military for specialised operations and transportation.
The crash has therefore raised questions about aviation safety, aircraft maintenance and the operational circumstances surrounding military flights.
However, officials have not attributed the accident to any specific cause, and conclusions about what led to the crash will depend on the outcome of the investigation.
The emergency response in Igbokoda has also brought attention to the importance of coordination between federal security agencies and state authorities during major disasters.
Aiyedatiwa’s directive places the resources of the Ondo State Government at the disposal of the rescue effort while the Nigerian Air Force leads the operation involving its aircraft.
Health officials were also directed to remain available to respond to any medical needs arising from the incident.
The governor’s decision to secure the crash area is expected to help protect the integrity of the site while allowing trained personnel to carry out their duties.
It also provides authorities with better control of access to the area as investigators and rescue teams work around the wreckage.
For families of those aboard the aircraft, the incident has created an anxious and painful situation as authorities work to provide confirmed information.
The state government has therefore urged residents and members of the public to rely on official updates rather than social media reports and unverified claims.
The warning is particularly important during emergencies, when inaccurate information can spread quickly and cause additional distress for families waiting for news about loved ones.
The accident also comes amid increasing calls for stronger safety measures across Nigeria’s aviation sector.
Although military and civilian aviation operations have different structures and requirements, aircraft accidents often lead to renewed discussions about maintenance, operational procedures, weather conditions, crew readiness and emergency response capacity.
The investigation ordered by the federal authorities is expected to examine the circumstances leading up to the crash and identify any factors that may have contributed to it.
Meanwhile, emergency personnel remain focused on the immediate task of responding to the incident.
The Ondo State Government has pledged to continue monitoring developments and supporting the Nigerian Air Force and other agencies involved in the operation.
Aiyedatiwa’s intervention also reflects the state’s responsibility to assist during emergencies occurring within its territory, particularly when an incident involves a large number of people and requires multiple agencies to respond.
Igbokoda residents have also been encouraged to avoid moving close to the crash site unless authorised to do so.
Keeping the area controlled is considered important for both safety and the effectiveness of the rescue and investigation efforts.
As more information emerges, authorities are expected to provide updates concerning the people who were on board, the outcome of the rescue operation and the circumstances surrounding the crash.
For now, the focus remains on the emergency response, the welfare of those affected and the recovery process.
The incident has left the Nigerian Air Force and the wider country mourning, while the families of those involved await further confirmed information.
Aiyedatiwa has assured the affected families that the Ondo State Government stands with them during the difficult period and will continue providing support to the agencies handling the emergency.
The governor’s directives have effectively placed the state’s emergency and security machinery behind the ongoing operation as authorities work to manage the aftermath of one of the state’s most serious aviation incidents in recent times.
