NYSC Suspends Deployment to Cross River Over Dilapidated Obubra Orientation Camp

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has reportedly suspended the deployment of corps members to Cross River State for the 2026 Batch C Stream II Orientation Course following concerns over the poor condition of facilities at its permanent orientation camp in Obubra.

The reported directive came after the NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu, inspected the camp and expressed dissatisfaction with the state of its infrastructure. The visit reportedly took place on October 10, 2026, ahead of the next orientation exercise scheduled to begin on November 4.

Reports indicate that several facilities at the camp have deteriorated, raising concerns about the ability of the centre to provide a suitable environment for corps members during the compulsory orientation programme.

The affected facilities reportedly include hostels, toilets, the kitchen and the parade ground. These facilities are essential to the daily activities of corps members, who spend several weeks at orientation camps undergoing physical training, lectures, skills development and other activities designed to prepare them for national service.

The condition of the Obubra camp has reportedly affected the number of corps members the state can accommodate. The facility, which previously hosted about 2,500 corps members per stream, is now said to accommodate slightly more than 1,000.

Cross River State has traditionally received thousands of corps members annually. However, the deteriorating condition of the camp has reportedly contributed to a significant decline in the number deployed to the state, with some corps members also seeking relocation to other states.

The reported suspension is expected to affect prospective corps members who may have anticipated attending the Batch C Stream II orientation programme in Cross River. If the directive remains in place, affected graduates could be assigned to other states for their orientation exercise until the necessary improvements are completed.

The development has also placed renewed attention on the responsibility of relevant authorities to maintain public facilities used for national programmes. Orientation camps must provide adequate accommodation, sanitation, security and other essential services to protect the welfare of corps members.

Following the inspection, the Cross River State Government reportedly directed contractors working at the camp to begin immediate rehabilitation and renovation work. The intervention is expected to address some of the problems identified and improve the condition of the facility.

The state government’s response could be significant in determining how quickly the camp becomes suitable for hosting future batches of corps members. However, the extent of the rehabilitation required and the timeline for completing the work remain important questions.

The NYSC orientation programme is a major part of Nigeria’s national service scheme, bringing together graduates from different backgrounds to promote national unity, discipline and community development. The quality of facilities at orientation camps therefore remains an important issue for the welfare of participants.

Although reports have circulated about the suspension of deployment to Cross River State, an official public confirmation of the directive was not independently verified in the available reporting as of October 15, 2026. Prospective corps members should continue to monitor official NYSC announcements for confirmed instructions concerning their deployment and orientation arrangements.

The situation in Obubra has highlighted the need for sustained investment in orientation camp infrastructure to ensure that corps members can participate in national service under safe and acceptable conditions.
