A new initiative that would permit journalists to accompany military personnel during specific operations is being considered by the federal government.
This was allegedly an attempt to enhance security reporting and provide the public with more information about the realities of counterinsurgency and other internal security initiatives.
At the Nigeria Union of Journalists’ National Security Summit in Abuja on Thursday, Gen. Christopher Musa, the minister of defense, revealed the plan.
The minister, represented by Rear Admiral Olusanya Bankole, his Special Advisor, stated that the proposed arrangement would promote transparency in military operations and encourage closer cooperation between the media and security agencies.
The public’s perception of security operations and national stability is strategically shaped by the media, according to Musa, who also pointed out that security management now goes beyond traditional battlegrounds.
He clarified that since information and narratives have a greater impact on contemporary conflicts, the media is a crucial player in the nation’s security framework.
The minister claims that the degree of public trust in security institutions should be taken into consideration when evaluating the effectiveness of security operations, rather than just military triumphs.
The media now serve as both enablers and stabilizers of government more than in the past.
“To enable more accurate reporting and a deeper understanding of operational realities, the defense ministry is investigating arrangements to embed journalists with military units during operations,” he stated.
According to Musa, the initiative was a component of the ministry’s larger efforts to improve media relations and guarantee that the public is given accurate information about military operations.
He emphasized that increased collaboration between security agencies and journalists would help to improve national security outcomes and foster public trust.
Nigeria is still dealing with a number of security issues, including insurgency, at the time of the proposed arrangement.
Due to restricted access to operational areas, security agencies have frequently been criticized. This has occasionally led to false information, contradictory reports, and public mistrust of developments on the front lines.
