Nigerian Navy Uncovers, Destroys Illegal Crude Oil Refining Sites in Rivers State

The Nigerian Navy has intensified its crackdown on crude oil theft and illegal refining activities with the discovery and destruction of several illegal refining sites in Rivers State, in what security officials describe as another major success in the fight against economic sabotage in the Niger Delta.

The operation, carried out by personnel attached to the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Pathfinder, formed part of the military’s ongoing efforts to protect Nigeria’s oil and gas infrastructure while curbing environmental pollution caused by illegal refining operations.

According to the Navy, the illegal refining camps were uncovered during a series of intelligence-led operations conducted in creeks and riverine communities within Rivers State, an area that has long been identified as one of the major hotspots for crude oil theft in the country.

During the raid, naval personnel reportedly discovered several makeshift refining facilities hidden deep inside the creeks. The facilities were equipped with locally fabricated ovens, large metal storage tanks, reservoirs containing stolen crude oil, hoses and other equipment commonly used for the illegal processing of petroleum products.

The operatives also recovered large quantities of suspected stolen crude oil and illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), popularly known as diesel.

After documenting the discoveries, the Navy deactivated and destroyed the illegal refining sites in accordance with existing operational procedures to prevent the facilities from being used again.

Officials said no arrests were made during the operation, as those behind the illegal activities fled into nearby forests and waterways upon sighting the advancing security personnel.

The Nigerian Navy explained that operations against crude oil theft have been intensified following renewed directives from the Federal Government aimed at safeguarding Nigeria’s oil production and reducing revenue losses caused by pipeline vandalism and illegal refining.

Authorities noted that crude oil theft continues to pose a serious threat to the nation’s economy by reducing government revenue, discouraging investment in the oil sector and damaging critical national infrastructure.

Beyond the economic consequences, security experts say illegal refining also creates severe environmental challenges.

The process often involves the burning of crude oil using primitive methods, releasing thick black smoke into the atmosphere while contaminating rivers, farmland and surrounding vegetation with petroleum waste.

Communities living near illegal refining sites have repeatedly complained about air pollution, destruction of aquatic life and declining agricultural productivity caused by oil spills and chemical contamination.

Environmental organisations have also warned that continued illegal refining contributes significantly to environmental degradation across the Niger Delta.

Speaking after the operation, naval authorities reaffirmed their commitment to sustaining aggressive patrols across Rivers State and other parts of the Niger Delta to dismantle criminal networks involved in crude oil theft.

They stressed that the Navy would continue working closely with other security agencies, local communities and intelligence sources to identify and eliminate illegal refining operations wherever they are found.

Residents of affected communities were also encouraged to support security agencies by providing credible information capable of leading to the arrest and prosecution of individuals involved in oil theft and pipeline vandalism.

The Navy assured Nigerians that protecting the country’s oil assets remains one of its highest operational priorities.

Security analysts believe the latest operation demonstrates the military’s determination to reduce economic sabotage while restoring confidence in Nigeria’s petroleum industry.

They note that sustained enforcement operations, combined with improved community engagement and stronger surveillance technology, will be essential in addressing the long-standing challenge of crude oil theft.

The successful destruction of the illegal refining sites is expected to contribute to ongoing efforts aimed at increasing Nigeria’s crude oil production while reducing losses associated with illegal bunkering activities.

As operations continue across the Niger Delta, the Nigerian Navy has reiterated that individuals involved in illegal refining and crude oil theft will continue to face intensified enforcement actions until such criminal activities are completely eradicated.
